We have investigated large deviations of the dynamical activity in models of glass-forming liquids. Some of these models support unusual phase transitions between active and inactive dynamical phases. I will show how these phase transitions can be investigated, both analytically and using computer simulation. Implications for theories of the glass transition will also be discussed.
