Ido Regev: „Structural effective temperature in amorphous solids”

We examine, using molecular dynamics simulations, the idea of an "effective" temperature that describes the structure of an amorphous solid and can be used as a state variable for deformation processes. It has been claimed that one can use such a temperature to describe the structure and dynamics of amorphous solids, and that this temperature shares the properties of the "real" thermodynamic temperature. In this talk we demonstrate that the local structure of an amorphous solid may indeed be described by a Boltzmann distribution where the energy is scaled by a temperature-like variable for the case of plastic deformation and radiation damage. We also show how one can predict the value of the effective temperature at the steady-state and examine the dynamics of the effective temperature in light of its presumed properties.
