Abstract

Mark Haw: „Jamming and unjamming in concentrated suspensions”
Dept. of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK

Highly concentrated colloidal suspensions can show extreme response to applied force, in particular stress-induced conversion from flowing liquid to stress-resisting solid. We demonstrate this stress-induced solidification of hard-sphere colloids in experiments in a number of different contexts important in processing, including converging channel flow, granulation and droplet impact. Based on these results we suggest that simple experiments in colloids can throw light not just on processing challenges and soft matter physics, but also on geophysical phenomena, such as magma solid-liquid stratification, and earthquake phenomena including dilation hardening and the puzzle of anomalously low apparent friction.
